Should I stock 4D if I already have 3D and 5D?

If you regularly work on fine natural lashes, yes - 4D is often the highest density those clients can safely wear while still getting a volume look. If your clientele is mostly robust lash lines, mapping with 3D and 5D covers the same ground.

My 4D sets photograph patchy - what should I change?

Spacing, almost always. Light fans do not fill the space between placements the way denser fans do, so a rhythm that works at 5D leaves visible bare lash line. Add placements rather than length.

What is the 17mm length actually for at this density?

Outer-corner drama on clients whose natural lashes can carry it, and for cat-eye or fox-eye maps where the outer third needs real reach. It is not a length to run across a map - at 17mm the leverage on the base is significant regardless of how few fibres the fan holds.

Can I mix 4D and 5D within one set?

Yes, and on an uneven lash line it is the better approach - 5D on the strong central lashes and 4D on the finer inner and outer ones. Hold length and curl constant so the density change reads as a natural taper.

A client wants more drama but her lashes are fine - what are my options?

Curl and mapping will change the impact far more than fibre count. A stronger curl and a more pronounced length contour give a dramatic result on a light set; if she truly needs density, a finer diameter at a higher count is the only safe route.
