How much wider should I space compared with 5D?

Enough that the fans do not overlap - in practice most artists use noticeably fewer placements per eye. The reliable test is whether you can still see natural lash line between fans; if not, the set will read closed rather than full.

Can I use this on a client who has previously lost lashes to heavy sets?

Possibly, if her lashes have recovered and the length stays conservative, but the safer route for a recovering lash line is a lower density or a finer diameter for at least one cycle. Weight is only part of it - aftercare habits usually need rebuilding too.

My 8D fans look great in the tray and flat on the lash - what is happening?

They are closing on placement, almost always because the base is being over-dipped or seated at an angle that folds the fan. Reduce your dip, and check you are laying the base flat along the natural lash rather than pressing it in nose-first.

Does 8D need a shorter infill cycle than 5D?

Slightly, because gaps in a denser set are more visible, but the bigger factor is aftercare. A well-maintained 8D set holds its appearance nearly as long as a 5D one; a poorly maintained one looks patchy much sooner because there is more to lose.
