Count the distinct lengths you actually place in a typical full set; if it is three or four, the 3in1 in your core range plus a second box for the outliers wastes less than a 6in1 where two sizes never get touched. The 6in1 earns its cost for artists who genuinely contour from inner corner to outer.

My 10D 0.03 fans keep closing into spikes - is the product or my technique the issue?

Technique, in nearly every case: 0.03 fibre wicks adhesive far faster than 0.05 or 0.07, so a dip depth that works elsewhere floods the fan. Dip only the very tip of the base, and replace the glue dot more often since a thickening dot grabs more fibre on contact.

How dense does 10D at 0.03 actually look compared to 5D at 0.07?

Fuller and softer - twice the fibre count fills gaps that 5D leaves, but the fine diameter means individual fibres blend rather than reading distinctly. Clients who want a defined, structured look will prefer 0.07; clients wanting a soft dense cloud will prefer this.

Should map transitions be 1mm or can I jump 2mm?

Consecutive 1mm steps are what make a contour look smooth; a 2mm jump creates a visible step, particularly through the centre of the eye where it is most exposed. Save larger jumps for the very outer corner where a deliberate drop can be part of the design.

Do I still need single-length boxes if I stock mixes?

Most artists keep one or two single-length boxes for the sizes they use heaviest, because a mix box runs those sizes out first while the others remain. Using mixes as the mapping backbone and singles to top up the high-turnover lengths is the usual working compromise.
