At 16D, what fails first when retention drops?

The base bond, and the cause is usually a thickening adhesive dot that coated the fibres rather than saturating the attachment point. Retention problems at this density are diagnosed at the glue dot far more often than at the fan or the client's aftercare.

Does 16D take longer to apply than 12D, even with fewer placements?

Usually yes. You place fewer fans, but each one needs a longer seating hold and more careful pick-up, and the stickie checks take longer because there is more fibre in play. Net appointment time tends to be similar or slightly longer, not shorter.

Can a client with average natural density tell 16D from 14D?

Rarely, in normal viewing conditions - the difference shows in macro photography and on sparse lash lines. Being straight about that in consultation builds more trust than upselling density that will not visibly change her set.

How do I keep a 16D set from looking closed on smaller eyes?

Reduce length through the centre and keep the curl flatter there, so the set opens outward rather than filling the lid space. At this density the silhouette does all the work, and a set that reads closed is nearly always mapped too long and too curled for the eye shape.

Is there a case for 16D on a client who only wants a natural look?

Not really - the whole point of this density is coverage, and a client wanting natural is better served by a lower count at a length that suits her own lash line. Applying a flagship density to a natural brief usually produces a set the client finds too much and the artist finds unrewarding.
